Rethinking Family Office Excellence Beyond Performance

This site serves as an educational resource for principals, trustees, and professionals involved with exempt single family offices. Rather than focusing solely on investment performance, the content here explores what truly sustains multi-generational wealth: relationship preservation, operational simplicity, next-generation engagement, and governance frameworks that prioritize family cohesion over complexity. Drawing on 15 years of wealth management experience and over a decade partnering with a single family office, these perspectives challenge the industry’s tech-stack obsession and return focus to the human elements that determine long-term success. Whether you’re structuring an ESFO, refining governance protocols, or engaging the next generation, you’ll find insights grounded in real-world practice and a client-first philosophy.

As a fourth-generation wealth professional, he understands that sustainable wealth isn’t built on performance alone—it’s built on relationships, operational clarity, and governance frameworks that serve families rather than vendors. Through his role at Continuum Capital LLC and his consulting practice launched in 2026, Roger focuses exclusively on helping exempt single family offices navigate their unique regulatory, operational, and human challenges. He holds a Bachelor of Science in History and Classical & Ancient Studies from the University of Colorado Boulder and is an active member of The Guardsmen, a San Francisco nonprofit dedicated to education and mentorship. Find Out More About Exempt Single Family Office

An Exempt Single Family Office (ESFO) is a private wealth management entity that serves only family members and is exempt from registration as an investment adviser under the Investment Advisers Act of 1940. The exemption, formalized through the Dodd-Frank Act, recognizes that family offices serving exclusively family clients operate under fundamentally different dynamics than traditional advisory firms. Key requirements include serving only family clients, no public solicitation or advertising, and being wholly owned and controlled by family members.

Despite the exemption, ESFOs face complex challenges: governance structure design, succession planning, family communication, investment oversight, and next-generation engagement. The exemption removes certain regulatory burdens—but it doesn’t simplify the human, operational, or strategic work required to sustain wealth across generations. This site exists to explore those realities, share practical insights, and offer perspectives shaped by direct experience within the exempt SFO landscape.
